Essaouira is the ancient Portuguese fortress of Mogador. It was fortified by a French architect who was a follower of Vauban. These influences gavea unique result, a cachet of authenticity without equal and the city gradually became a city of artists. Only 2 hours from Marrakech, Essaouira benefits from an extremely favourable microclimate which ensures mild temperatures in winter and cool during the summer. Its long beach caressed by the trade winds and its peaceful medina give it a unique charm.
The craftsmen of Essaouira are justly renowned for their marquetry on thuja roots.
